The spring 2022 University of Arizona College of Science Lecture Series focused on minerals, the building blocks of the solar system, earth, and civilization. The fourth presenter in the weekly series was MGE assistant professor Isabel Barton, who discussed "what minerals do for us" from the stage at Centennial Hall.

"The fundamental message is that technology requires minerals," Barton said. "So, what technology we have and what we can do with it is pretty much a direct function of what materials we have available to work with."

In this regard, Arizona is well-suited for supporting current and future technology, thanks to the state's strong mining industry. In fact, copper even represents one of the "Five Cs" of Arizona's identity.

Throughout her lecture, Barton discusses how humanity has become exponentially more involved and reliant on mineral extraction. Looking ahead, she discusses what this will mean for the future of the mining industry and Arizona.
